How to Handle a Roof Insurance Claim After Storm or Hail Damage
After a hailstorm or high winds, a roof can have damage you cannot see from the ground. Filing an insurance claim feels intimidating, but a clear process helps.
This is general guidance, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy and your insurance company decide coverage. Our storm damage team can help with the roofing side.
1. Stay Safe and Prevent Further Damage
Do not climb on a damaged roof. If water is coming in, protect belongings and, if you can do so safely, cover the area. Call us at (301) 466-3630 if it is an active leak.
2. Document Everything
Take photos and video of damage from the ground and inside the home, including ceiling stains. Note the date and time of the storm. Save any receipts for emergency repairs.
3. Get a Free Roof Inspection
A roofer can safely inspect the roof, siding, and gutters, and document hail bruising, creased shingles, and damaged flashing. Book a free inspection. See also what to do right after a storm in our storm checklist.
4. Review Your Policy and Call Your Insurer
Check your deductible and what your policy says about roof damage, then open a claim. Ask about timelines. Your adjuster will schedule an inspection.
5. Share Documentation With Your Adjuster
We work directly with insurance adjusters and provide documentation of the damage we find, so what matters to your claim is accurately recorded.
6. Choose Your Contractor Carefully
Verify licenses before you sign. TEO Roofing's Maryland MHIC numbers and other state licenses are listed on our licenses and certifications page. We are also GAF Master Elite and IICRC certified.
