Fixed, Fresh Air, Solar, or Sun Tunnel: How to Choose a Skylight
Once you decide to add light from above, the next question is which kind of skylight. VELUX offers several families, and the best choice depends on the room and how you use it.
Here is how we walk homeowners through the decision. You can also browse VELUX's own Fixed Skylights Guide and other product guides.
Fixed Skylights: Light Without Ventilation
A fixed skylight does not open. It is a good fit for stairwells, hallways, and rooms where ventilation is not the goal. It is the simplest option and often the most budget-friendly.
Fresh Air Skylights: Light Plus Ventilation
Manual and electric Fresh Air skylights open to let warm, humid air out. They are popular in bathrooms, kitchens, and upper-floor rooms. Electric models can be controlled with a remote, and many can be paired with blinds.
Solar Powered Skylights: No Wiring Required
Solar powered Fresh Air skylights run on a built-in solar panel, which helps when running electrical wiring to the roof opening would be difficult. They offer the same fresh air and light with simpler installation.
Sun Tunnels: Daylight for Tight Spaces
A Sun Tunnel uses a reflective tube to carry daylight from the roof into a closet, hallway, or interior bathroom where a full skylight and light shaft would not fit. See VELUX's Sun Tunnel resources.
Blinds, Shades, and Sizing
Shades help manage glare and heat gain, especially on south-facing roofs. Sizing matters too, and VELUX publishes a skylight size guide. We confirm sizing and placement during your free estimate.
